Objective

This module is designed to help workers understand the power of modelling as a proven strategy for high performance. By aligning with effective models, employees can accelerate their journey toward excellence, thereby fostering workplace productivity and contributing to nation-building.

Introduction

Start the session by showing employees relatable examples of modelling in everyday life:

  • A child learning to walk by observing adults.
  • A child imitating words and speech patterns.
  • Peer-to-peer learning of habits and character.
  • An architectural model serving as a prototype for construction.

Activity: Ask participants to identify examples of modelling they see around them and discuss how these examples illustrate learning or performance improvement.

Content

The Power of Modelling

  • Modelling is one of the fastest paths to peak performance because it allows individuals to leverage the wisdom, strategies, and experiences of others.
  • By following a model, you can compress years of learning into a much shorter time frame. While mastery takes time, principles can often be learned quickly and applied immediately.
  • Modelling provides a tested blueprint, reducing the trial-and-error process that often hinders growth.

Why Modelling Matters in the Workplace

  • Borrowed Wisdom: No one has all the answers. Effective modelling allows employees to fill knowledge gaps by learning from others.
  • Replicable Success: Success leaves clues, and modelling enables you to replicate these success patterns.
  • Principle Alignment: Modelling helps workers understand and apply principles that transcend personality or circumstances.

Broader Implications for Nation-Building

  • By fostering a culture of learning and collaboration in the workplace, employees become more productive and innovative. These qualities, in turn, contribute to stronger organisations, industries, and ultimately, national development.

Practical Modelling Exercises

  1. Lessons from Nature:
    Discussion Prompt:
    • What do you think of bees or ants?
    • How do their behaviours (e.g., teamwork, organisation, consistency) inspire workplace excellence?
Activity: List three lessons from their behaviours that can be applied to work productivity.
  2. Peer Assessment:
    Activity:
    • List a few colleagues who are at your level of experience, grade, or performance:
      a. _________________________________________________
      b. _________________________________________________
      c. _________________________________________________
    • Identify the dominant habits or behaviours you all share:
      a. _________________________________________________
      b. _________________________________________________
  3. Aspirational Modelling:
    Activity:
    • List people who are at the next level of experience or performance you aspire to reach:
      a. _________________________________________________
      b. _________________________________________________
    • Identify their dominant habits or traits that you could adopt:
  4. Character Shift:
Prompt: Reflect on how you can make a deliberate shift from current habits to align with the traits of aspirational models. Discuss the necessary changes in work ethic, attitude, and relationships.

The 5Ws and H of Modelling Excellence

To effectively adopt modelling, reflect on these guiding questions:

  • Who: Who are the individuals excelling in areas you aim to improve? Look for those with proven success in specific skills or roles.
  • Why: Why are you modelling after them? Define your purpose to ensure alignment with your goals.
  • What: What specific traits, habits, or strategies do you want to replicate? Avoid picking up irrelevant or unhelpful behaviours.
  • When: When is the right time to apply these models? Ensure timing is appropriate for your career stage and responsibilities.
  • Where: In what contexts (e.g., workplace, home, community) should these traits be applied? Adapt behaviours to fit the environment.
  • How: How will you assimilate these traits? Develop a clear process for learning and application, such as observation, practice, and feedback.

Interactive Activities

  1. Pictorial Representation:
    • Have participants create a vision board illustrating the traits, habits, and achievements of their aspirational models.
  2. Role Reversal Exercise:
    • Pair participants and assign one to act as the mentor (model) while the other is the mentee. The “mentee” will practise asking questions and applying advice.
  3. Workplace Alignment Audit:
    • Participants will evaluate their current habits and relationships, identifying areas where a shift towards higher-performance models is needed.

Conclusion

Modelling is a transformative tool for workplace excellence and productivity. By adopting proven strategies, habits, and behaviours, employees can accelerate their growth and contribute meaningfully to organisational success and nation-building.
Key Takeaway: “Success is replicable—borrow, learn, and build upon it.”
