SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT matrix) is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and is a structured planning method that evaluates those four elements of a job, organization, project or business venture and can be applied towards job search and to evaluate an employee.
Strengths: characteristics of the job seeker (personnel) that gives him an advantage over others
Weaknesses: characteristics that places one at a disadvantage relative to others

Opportunities: elements in the environment that the job seeker or personnel could exploit to advantage.
Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble or limitations e.g. competition.
SWOT analysis groups key pieces of information into two main categories:
Internal factors – the strengths and weaknesses internal factors that are intrinsic or part of you. You must know your strength and weakness. Your strength guides you to what kind of job you should look for. Again, you must know those weaknesses you must surmount e.g. seeking for more training or education. The more you reduce your weakness factor the more you become relevant.
External factors – the opportunities and threats presented by the environment external to you. You must find a way of harnessing your environment. This is where creative ingenuity comes in. Two people could be equally qualified for an opening. Yet one may not be abreast of the opportunity, so the other who is aware would lay hold of the opportunity.
When you are job searching you must know your abilities, your resources, gifts and talents; they are your marketable strength. Your weaknesses include those limitations within you which include qualification deficiency, physique, language, etc. Seek for ways to build up or overcome your area of weakness.
Find opportunities and make the best of them, failure to get or access opportunities makes our skills of little value.
Threats to your career growth include competitors i.e. other applicants or personnel that have similar competence; what you need to do is to use your creative power to beat through the competition in the market place.
